Our specialists

Our respiratory specialists, trained in sleep, work as a team with an integrated approach to enable accurate diagnosis and treat your sleep disorder in the most effective way possible.

Consultation with a pulmonologist

Your pulmonologist is a specialist doctor who is an expert in the respiratory system.

Côté Santé pneumologists are medical specialists, some of whom are also active practitioners in research centers. The entire medical team is managed by the pulmonologist who specializes in sleep Katéri Champagne (doctor specializing in internal medicine, pneumology, FRCPC, MSc Epidemiology, Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine).

When to consult ?

Consult a pulmonologist if your condition cannot be treated effectively with standard protocols. This is the case, for example, if you suffer from a complex sleep disorder or a severe nocturnal respiratory disease.

The pulmonologist assesses advanced sleep apnea, sleep-related breathing disorders, or other rare conditions that require specialized expertise (narcolepsy, hypersomnolence, hypoventilation, hypoxemia, hypoxemia, COMISA, etc.).

Process

A program designed to assess and treat complex sleep-related respiratory disorders. Benefit from specialized expertise and personalized follow-up tailored to your condition.

01

File opening

Once we have identified your need, we can offer you a consultation with a pulmonologist from our team. Depending on the pulmonologist, fees may apply.

02

Course of the meeting

The consultation, which lasts between 20 and 50 minutes, takes place virtually or by telephone. A detailed health questionnaire must be completed prior to the appointment to better understand your condition. The pulmonologist will review your medical history and assess the need for specific treatment for your respiratory problems.

03

The detailed consultation report, including your medical history and recommendations, will be sent to you within a week. The pulmonologist will establish a precise diagnosis and suggest appropriate treatment options.

04

At your appointment, your respiratory therapist will gather your information and assess your situation in detail. He or she will suggest alternative solutions and direct you to the resources and services best suited to your needs.

Côté Santé's general practitioners work under the supervision of lung specialist Katéri Champagne, a sleep expert.

When to consult

The purpose of this consultation is usually to obtain a prescription for a sleep test (which must be issued by a doctor).

This service is therefore ideal if :

  • you want a sleep test or treatment, but you don't have access to your family doctor... or, like many people, you don't have a family doctor!
  • you need to have your treatment reviewed, for example because it's no longer giving such good results.

Frequently asked questions

Find quick answers to the most frequently asked questions.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is characterized by a nocturnal breathing disorder caused by temporary obstructions in the upper respiratory tract (jaw, soft palate, uvula, tonsils, tonsils, tongue, throat). These episodes result in either a temporary cessation of breathing (apnea) or a marked decrease in respiratory flow (hypopnea). They can cause micro-awakenings, a drop in blood oxygen and increased respiratory effort, often (not always) accompanied by snoring.

What are the common symptoms of sleep apnea?
  • Excessive tiredness or a feeling of never being rested, even after a full night
  • Sleepiness during the day (e.g. falling asleep in front of the television, reading, or driving)
  • Morning headaches
  • Dry mouth or sore throat when you wake up
  • Concentration problems and memory loss
  • Irritability, bad mood, anxiety, or depressive symptoms
  • Decreased libido, hormonal disorders, or erection problems
  • Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat (especially in women)
Do you need a doctor's prescription to do a sleep test?

Yes, a prescription from a doctor or IPS (Specialized Nurse Practitioner) is required. If you don't have one, we can refer you to an affiliated doctor.

What does the AHI (Apnea-Hypopnea Index) mean?

The IAH measures the number of respiratory arrests per hour of sleep:

  • Light: 5 to 15
  • Moderate: 15 to 30
  • Severe: 30 and over

Average number of events per hour corresponding either to a complete cessation of breathing (apnea) or to a marked decrease in respiratory amplitude (hypopnea), occurring despite maintained or increased respiratory effort.

Severity criteria

The severity of sleep apnea is assessed by taking into account all the symptoms experienced by the person (not just sleepiness during the day), as well as a number called the AHI (Apnea-Hypopnoea Index), which measures the number of abnormal respiratory events per hour.

Depending on the symptoms, the doctor determines how mild (5 to 15 events per hour), moderate (15 to 30 events per hour), or severe (30 events per hour), or severe (30 events per hour) the disease is.

Is untreated sleep apnea dangerous?

Yes Among other things, it can lead to:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart attacks and strokes
  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Metabolic disorders — obesity
  • Cognitive problems — memory problems
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Liver problems
  • Reduced quality of life
